The History of Latrobe's on Royal

Designed by the “Father of American architecture” Benjamin Henry Latrobe, La Banque de L’Etat de la Louisiane, or the Louisiana State Bank, was the first bank chartered in Louisiana after reconstruction. His architectural plans were completed on August 10, 1820. Benjamin Fox executed Latrobe’s plans and completed construction of the State Bank building in 1822.

Now lovingly restored many hallmarks of Latrobe’s original design remain including a large vaulted “whisper dome” adorned with a low relief rosette at its apex, hand-painted wall murals, checkerboard black and white marble floor tiles and a traditional rear carriage house. The formerly open courtyard was covered during a late 19th century renovation yielding 7,000 square feet of first floor interior space. The second floor, originally designed as living quarters for the bank’s cashier, has been brought back to its former glory as a 4,000 square foot private residence.

The Louisiana State Bank retained ownership of the structure until it lost its charter in 1870. Various commercial enterprises occupied the building until the early 1930’s when Bernard Manheim leased it for use as an antiques gallery. On May 4, 1983, the building was designated as an historic landmark gaining its position in the National Register of Historic Places. The property remained in the Manheim family until the present owners purchased the building and began the latest renovation.
